RMT Accountants bolsters corporate finance team with executive appointment
An experienced business finance professional who swapped Seahouses for Switzerland has returned to his native North East to join RMT Accountants & Business Advisors’ corporate finance team.
Matthew Weightman has been recruited by the Gosforth-headquartered firm as a corporate finance executive and brings more than 15 years’ experience to his new role.
Originally from north Northumberland, Matthew joined HSBC’s international graduate programme after completing a degree in French, German and International Business at Aston University.
He developed his career through private and corporate banking positions across Switzerland, Brazil and London before returning to Zurich to spend over seven years as a corporate banking relationship manager, working with a range of Swiss businesses on all aspects of their international funding and banking needs.
He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and an Executive MBA from IESE Business School in Munich.
RMT Accountants & Business Advisors provides the full range of financial and business advisory services through its specialist accountancy, tax, medical and healthcare, corporate finance and restructuring teams.
It is part of the Sumer Group, the UK’s fastest-growing accountancy firm, which delivers professional support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and employs over 3,000 staff across more than 80 offices.
Matthew Weightman says: “When I decided it was time to come home, I looked at a range of career options across the North East and was attracted by the extent of the strategic investment that RMT and Sumer are making in the business’s capabilities, as well as the group’s focussed mission of championing the owner managed SMEs that are at the heart of the regional economy.
“I’m immensely proud to have grown up in this region, helping my grandfather and uncle during school holidays in the family business, and that appreciation has grown even stronger over the years that I have been away.
“My personal mission is therefore very much aligned with RMT and Sumer in wanting to help SMEs in the region grow or successfully manage a succession via expert strategic advice and strong relationships, all of which is backed up by national capabilities and sector expertise.
“I have a keen interest in both the operational and the human sides of the role, and in supporting business owners with some of the most important events and transactions of their lifetime. Building a detailed understanding of both elements will ensure I can help each business owner achieve their personal and commercial objectives.
“A great deal of the experience and knowledge I’ve built up through my career is directly relevant to the challenges and opportunities that North East business owners face every day, and my focus is on using it to help our clients make the right decisions for their businesses and themselves.
“Being part of the RMT team has already surpassed my expectations and I’m already working on a range of interesting M&A and finance raising projects that demonstrate the vitality and ambition of the North East SME economy.”
Michael McCulloch, corporate finance partner at RMT Accountants & Business Advisors, adds: “Matthew has built up an enviable range of commercial experience and knowledge through his career so far, and he is an excellent addition to our growing corporate finance team.
“His appointment is part of RMT’s continuing strategic investment in its corporate finance capabilities which is designed to ensure we can provide an advisory service that meets the needs of the regional business community”
